Forensic anthropology is a subfield of physical anthropology that focuses on the identification and examination of human skeletal remains in a legal context. Forensic anthropologists analyze bones to determine the age, sex, ancestry, stature, and any potential signs of trauma or disease in order to establish the identity of an individual and assist in criminal investigations. They may also be called upon to provide expertise in cases of mass disasters, war crimes, and missing persons. This field combines principles of anthropology, anatomy, and forensic science to help law enforcement agencies and medical examiners solve crimes and bring closure to families of the deceased.
